Jazzy Journal #1: The Girl Who Drank the Moon

First and foremost, I think that this book is beautifully written. This book, in my opinion, would make a phenomenal tv series. The elements of magic are very popular in today's entertainment so it would automatically draw readers in. But I believe that the overall message would stand to resonate with viewers. The story does a good job at tackling adult themes in a way that people of all ages can understand. One theme is family. We see throughout this book that family is not always connected by blood. This is something that I believe that a lot of people can relate to. Another is the battle between sorrow and hope. Everyone in life has battles with these feelings and I think that is something that audiences could also relate to. When reading this book I think that everyone is able to find a character they can relate to or that they are drawn to. I think that this would also translate over onto a screen very well. Even if there isn't a character that you can resonate with, hopefully you can understand and empathize with their actions. For example, when Xan decides to not reveal to Luna where she came from or anything about her past. I found myself judging Xan for this, but where I placed judgement there could be someone who understands her motives as well as her actions. Or you could find solace in Luna's wild nature, or Glerk's wise words. I think the character people would be drawn to is Antain because he is a product of his environment that is different. He's curious and questions things around him, though he goes along with the masses even when he knows it's wrong (like on the Day of Sacrifice). These complex characters and elements of fantasy I believe would be a hit. Though, I think that once people start watching they can see how powerful and relatable the underlying themes are throughout the series. I also think that with each episode you take two different viewpoints that you can jump between. These types of series are always different and captivating in consequence.  The title of each episode could also be raised like the different chapters throughout the book. Overall, if this book was created into a tv series I would 100% watch it and I think others would too.

The Class and Cannon Culture

The Youtube Video “The Problem with Cancel Culture” I found really interesting and eye opening. Akandbi made a really good point at the beginning of the video, she said that “We undermine how easy it is for us to become the people that we dislike.” I think that this is very true. As a society we like to be quick to judge and form opinions without any sign of sympathy or empathy. It is also easier to look at characteristics in other people and find what we don’t like (we then cancel them for it) instead of being introspective and working on ourselves to become better people. This makes it easy to become people in which we dislike. I personally believe that as a society, we should be able to separate the life of the creator from their creations. If we were to look hard enough you would be able to find mistakes in any creator’s past that you could exploit as means of perpetuating cancel culture. So, with this being the case, I believe that it’s a vital skill to s...

"Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe"

I am going to start this off by saying that this is one of the best books I've ever read. From the moment I picked it up I couldn't put it back down. It gave me insight into a world that I had never seen before. What it really made me realize was that what a privilege it is to never have to deal with coming out to the people around you. It's this unsaid rule in our society that being straight is the default sexuality until proven otherwise. Straight people never have to worry about coming out, being accepted based on who you like, and never have to grapple over feeling ashamed or as if there's something wrong with you because of a preference.  After reading this book I wondered to myself if it would have had the same effect for audiences if it would have been centered around two girls. For myself personally, I don't think that this would have had the same effect. This book not only touched on being gay, but something that I think is also very important to discuss,...

Final "Exam" Blog Post

The book I want to include in the curriculum is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe . A common argument that I hear is “Why have kids spend time in class reading something they can easily read on their own?” and my response is this: Kids can sometimes read a book and not understand some of the subtle, but key components of the story without some guidance. Isn’t this why we have english class? To teach kids how to read books beyond their words and into the meaning that it holds and how that is constructed throughout the story? There are stories like this one that are important to not only read, but understand. It gives a different perspective and teaches empathy if you read in between the lines. Another argument that is commonly made is “Kids have to grow up and take themselves and their work seriously. I do. We expect them to.” Just because this book is classified as young adult literature does not mean that they cannot learn mature themes and topics from thi...
